Introduction of Coins
The mintage of cents at San Francisco in 1947 fell to have that of the previous year, as an economic recession joined with the huge production of the war years to lessen demand for new coins across all denominations. Quality control at the San Francisco Mint was abysmal in 1947. Under a tight, post-war budget, the dies were run until they became visibly worn and eroded, at which point they were crudely polished for further use. This sometimes resulted in slightly prooflike surfaces combined with heavy polishing lines. The certified population of 1947-S cents nevertheless reveals a fair number of high grade gems. The bright luster which results from die erosion is quite appealing to many, and such coins may earn high grades despite having incomplete strikes. A well struck coin with excellent surfaces is a true rarity, a fact not always reflected in the Census data. Several repunched mintmark varieties are known for this issue, all of them minor and of little general interest.Read More
