Einführung von Münzen

This very low mintage issue is especially interesting, as both the currency pieces and the proofs were struck from a single pair of dies. It appears that the latter were coined first, since some of the currency strikes include a die crack on the reverse not seen on proofs.  Surviving examples are very rare, with Osburn/Cushing estimating that just 40 or so coins are known, exclusive of the more often seen proofs. Most fall within the higher circulated grades, very worn coins being unknown, while Mint State pieces are quite rare. Choice and gem specimens are exceedingly rare, and 1855 silver dollars tend to be weakly struck irrespective of grade. These sometimes display semi-prooflike fields, which is not surprising given that the same dies had been used previously to coin proofs.Mehr lesen
