The Philadelphia Mint struck just over 300,000 mint state $5 half eagles in 1879, a far cry from the millions struck in the years following. Due to the lower mintage, this issue is not nearly as common in grades of MS64 or higher as later issues, but it is still obtainable. The Mint also struck 30 proofs, of which less than ten are still known. As evidenced by the minuscule mintage, they are extremely rare in any grade.Mehr lesen
