In the mid-1860s, the Philadelphia Mint annually produced only minimal numbers of eagles. Since gold coins did not circulate except in the far west, and double eagles were preferred for export and reserve purposes, mintages of the remaining gold denominations were limited. The 1865 has a typically minuscule production of 3,980 business strikes, along with just 25 proofs. The 1865 is also noteworthy as the final No Motto Philadelphia issue.Mehr lesen
