With the nation in an economic recession, the Denver Mint's production of quarter dollars fell off quite a bit in 1949. While this issue is not rare in Mint State, the certified population thins considerably above MS 66. 1949-D quarters, while well made, seem to be more subject to contact marks than their Philadelphia cousins. Conditions were such this year that San Francisco coined no quarters at all. The only variety of note is a controversial one. Though most specialists believe that it an overmintmark, D over S, this opinion is not universal. Others describe it as simply a dramatic D over D variety.Mehr lesen
