In 1885, the Philadelphia Mint struck nearly 18 million Morgan dollars. Clearly, the Mint had their hands full considering how few quarter eagles were struck. A minuscule total of only 800 $2.5 coins were struck in the facility that year. 87 of those were proofs, with the balance being struck with a mint state finish. Today, mint state coins are more plentiful than proofs, but they tend to come in low mint state or below. Proofs on the other hand come pretty nice, with grades hovering around gem.Mehr lesen
