Why the sales of proof sets seemingly went from 600 in 1869 to 1,000 the following year is unexplained, and it's doubtful that the figure for 1870 is accurate. This date is not especially common, as its high reported mintage would suggest. The proofs of the 1870s are generally inferior in certain respects to those of the previous decade, and some indication of this may be found in the illustrated specimen, which is not fully struck at the upper left of the wreath.Mehr lesen
