The 1862 proof Indian Head Cent is perhaps the ideal type coin for the copper-nickel series. This date is plentiful from a hoard that was dispersed many years ago, and most examples from this source are of very high quality. The actual mintage for this date was probably higher than the 550 figure reported, as that represents only the sale of silver proof sets, which included the minor coins, as well.
