The actual number of proof, No L 1864 bronze cents sold is uncertain, and other sources put the figure at either 300, 150 or simply 100+. The lower numbers represent the pieces sold as part of the silver proof sets, but it's likely that additional pieces were sold with the minor proof sets. This will never be known with any accuracy, as the records of proof minor coin sales before 1878 were destroyed in 1925. What we do know for certain is that gem examples, particularly those having much red or any degree of cameo contrast are quite rare.
