In 1876 the City of Philadelphia hosted the nation's centennial celebration, and this brought thousands of tourists to the home of the U. S. Mint. The large number of proofs sold this year was certainly a consequence of so many of these visitors touring the mint and purchasing souvenirs. Perhaps due to this larger than normal production, enough gems have survived to make this one of the more available early proof Indian Head Cents displaying much red and some cameo contrast. Some examples have been described as "one-sided proofs," a reference to clumsy polishing of the reverse die which left distracting striations that then transferred to the coins struck from it.Leer más
