1908 was the first year of issue for the new Indian half eagle design. The coins featured sunken-relief as opposed to the raised relief on all other United States coinage issues. While not appreciated at the time, the coins are very popular with collectors today. While production at the Denver and San Francisco Mints were quite low for a first year issue, the Philadelphia Mint struck an impressive 577,845 coins in 1908.
