The Medal of Honor is the United State's military's highest award for valor in action against an enemy. 2011 was the 150th anniversary of the creation of the Medal of Honor in 1861. In honor of this historic anniversary, Congress authorized the sales of up to 500,000 silver dollars and 100,000 $5 gold coins. As is often the case with commemorative issues, surcharges were added to raise funds for a specific cause. In this case, almost $2.5 million was raised for the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation, which helps perpetuate "the legacy of the Medal of Honor by funding programs to promote the ideals of courage, sacrifice, selfless service and patriotism among the American public."Leer más
