With the hobby enjoying steady growth during the prosperous 1950s, the number of persons buying proof sets rose rapidly. While most collectors had previously purchased just a single set each year, the rising values for 1936-42 and 1950-51 sets prompted a speculative market to develop around this time. It was now common for buyers to purchase five or more sets in the hope of turning a profit. Thus, sales nearly doubled during 1954. More coins having been struck has resulted in a greater number of certified gems, though the percentage of these qualifying for the Cameo designation is quite small. Census figures skew this ratio in favor of the Cameo pieces, which are more likely to be submitted for grading. Ultra Cameo proofs of the 1954 dime are very rare.Leer más
