Walter Breen reported that 10 obverse dies were shipped to San Francisco for 1862's dime coinage, along with two reverses to supplement ones leftover from the previous year. Seated Liberty Dime researcher Gerry Fortin has identified only a single obverse and two reverses for the 1862 S coinage, the other obverse dies undoubtedly having been destroyed unused at the end of that year. The reverses remained in use year after year for as long as they were serviceable. The snakelike S mintmark used in 1861 is seen again with this year's dimes and would appear as late as 1871. Though slightly more available the 1861 S issue, this year's San Francisco Mint dimes are rare across all grades. Mint State pieces are extremely elusive.Leer más
