ONE DIME

Introducción de monedas

The Specie Resumption Act of 1875 called for an accelerated coinage of silver to redeem the fractional currency notes then circulating. The declining price of silver promised to make this a reality, and the desired goal was achieved in 1876 when silver once again became plentiful in commerce. By the end of 1877, however, the price had fallen to the point where millions of earlier silver coins also poured into circulation, and the production of dimes was greatly curtailed during 1878-82. While currency strikes of this date are thus scarce, the proofs are fairly plentiful. Speculative interest in the proof-only trade dollars of 1878-83 prompted high proof set sales during those years. No fewer than three die pairs were used in the coining of 1,100 proof dimes for 1879. One obverse displays very minor repunching of numeral 9, while another has a nearly bald patch in Liberty's base as a consequence of excessive die polishing (photos). The quality of proof 1879 dimes is variable, though the sheer number of pieces coined has resulted in a relatively high number of gem survivors. Cameo pieces are more plentiful than for earlier years in the 1870s, but Ultra Cameo dimes are quite rare.Leer más
