A continued glut of dimes in circulation limited the production of currency pieces to only 36,000, all of these coming from the Philadelphia Mint alone. Sales of proofs actually advanced to 1,355, a record for the Seated Liberty series. Two die pairs were utilized in this high production, which was prompted by speculative interest in the 1880 trade dollar (silver proofs could be purchased only in complete sets from cent through dollar). The quality of the U. S. Mint's proofs was improving by this time, after hitting a low in the 1870s. Gems of this date are fairly plentiful, and even Cameo proofs are quite collectable. Only Ultra Cameo examples are truly rare.Leer más
