ONE DIME
Introducción de monedas
The Treasury was still working off its existing supply of dimes in 1880, and there was absolutely no demand for additional pieces. Those coined this year were intended to provide collectors and the public with an alternative to purchasing proofs, to discourage speculation in the latter and to keep the denomination current. The low mintage of 1880 dimes was not, as is often reported, due to the Mint being occupied with silver dollar coinage. Many 1880 dimes were preserved in Mint State for their attractively low mintage, and worn pieces are the exception. These are quite rare, but the availability of Mint State examples holds their values in check. Only at the very highest grades is this issue rare. Most survivors are faintly to fully prooflike, as the dies were not used enough to produce the textured frostiness normally associated with currency pieces. Some of these coins may be difficult to distinguish from actual proofs, and such determinations require professional certification.Leer más
