The figure of 960 proof dimes for 1871 was rather high for the coin market of that time, and it's likely that many remained unsold at the end of the year. Scholar Walter Breen reported that at least some of these were melted in July of 1873, after that year's weight change rendered them obsolete. Three die marriages are known from three obverse and two reverse dies. One obverse shows clear repunching of numerals 18, and this variety does carry some premium among specialists. Typical of this period, the overall quality of proof 1871 dimes is below that of those minted in the 1860s. Both Cameo and Ultra Cameo proofs are thus more rare for this date, too.Leer más
