1908 was the first year of issue for the new Indian quarter eagle design. The coins featured sunken-relief as opposed to the raised relief on all other United States coinage issues. While not appreciated at the time, the coins are very popular with collectors today. The Philadelphia Mint struck 236 proofs of the new design using a new matte proof finish. This new process produced coins that were dark and matte and were not at all popular with collectors. Therefore, many of the proofs were likely spent leading to a much lower survival number.
