The half dollars of 1831 are among the more boring entries in this otherwise popular coin series. Some 20 die marriages resulted from combinations of 12 obverse and 14 reverse dies. There are no varieties meriting separate line items, and only one die marriage is rare: O-120 features an obverse die that evidently was not hardened properly, as it quickly sank and became unusable. Mint State survivors are plentiful, but far too many are poorly struck from severely worn dies. The U. S. Mint was in economy mode at the time, and the dies were used far too long. Gems are only moderately scarce, but the wise buyer is one who waits for a well struck example.Leer más
