Speculative frenzy over the new Kennedy Half Dollar drove sales of the 1964 proof set to nearly four million before the Mint reached its capacity to coin them and cut off further sales. Many checks were returned to persons who ordered multiple sets. 1964 was the peak year of coin collecting as a popular mass hobby in America, and no one wanted to miss out on the imagined profits to be made. The 1964 proof nickel is very common, even in high grades. Both Cameo and Ultra Cameo pieces exist in sufficient numbers to be readily collectable at reasonable premiums. Doubled-die varieties abound, with a few being interesting enough that they should be more widely sought.Leer más
