The feverish market in modern proof sets reached its pinnacle in 1957, as seemingly every collector ordered multiple sets. The result was a doubling in proof set sales over 1956 and an adverse reaction to this date's million+ mintage. The market collapsed for a time, only to rebound just a couple years later. As a percentage of total mintage Cameo proofs are rare, but the great number of dies required for this large mintage increased the absolute numbers of such pieces. As always before the 1970s, Ultra Cameo proofs are very rare. The Wexler/Ribar book illustrates several DDO and DDR varieties for 1957 nickels, but most of these are minor and of interest only to variety specialists.Leer más
