Coinage of the half dime more than doubled at the San Francisco from 1867, and this was indicative of a trend that affected other silver denominations, too. While there was little use for a five-cent piece in the inflated economy of the West, such coins were needed to pay off depositors of silver to the exact cent. Mint State examples of this issue are more plentiful than for earlier San Francisco half dimes in direct proportion to their higher mintage. Circulated pieces are likewise more common. This higher production wore out dies, and the coin illustrated displays numerous cracks and signs of die erosion.Leer más
