Introducción de monedas

Christian Gobrecht's new design featuring Liberty Seated and looking backward over her shoulder debuted on the silver dollars of 1836, was adapted to the dimes and half dimes in 1837, and then transitioned with the old Capped Bust type on the quarter dollar in the following year. Unlike the two smaller coins, this denomination was never issued without the 13 stars that encircle Liberty. These were integral to the master die and thus did not have to be punched into each working die, as was done with the smaller coins until 1840. The modest mintage of fewer than half a million pieces was all that could be produced during the final quarter of 1838, coinage having commenced September 29. A fair number of Mint State pieces were preserved for their novelty, but not nearly as many as were saved of the dime and half dime. Such coins are elusive, and gems are genuinely rare. The reverse design evidently not transfer fully from hub to working die, and the eagle's claws are found with two variations, these evidently being punched or engraved after the main transfer process was completed. The distinction between "open claws" and "closed claws" is subtle and of interest only to specialists. Their relative rarity is still being determined.Leer más
