Mint Director Snowden's illegal policy of exchanging fractional silver coins for deposits of silver bullion continued into 1857, and the result was considerable profits for the depositors and an abundance of 1857 Philadelphia Mint quarter dollars. This date is very common across all grades up to and including Mint State. A fair number of gems have been certified, and these often find their ways into high grade type collections. Buyers should be alert to purchase only well struck examples, as ones having incomplete strikes are quite common. There numerous die pairs for this large mintage, but the only variety of general interest is a single reverse die that somehow clashed with the reverse of a Flying Eagle Cent! There are several such mis-matched die clashings known for the 1857 cents, but this variety (Briggs-6F) is the only instance of it being found on the companion die.Leer más
