A very low mintage and a high rate of attrition has left the 1859-S quarter dollar a very scarce coin in all grades. The majority of survivors are heavily worn and have flaws that preclude them from being certified with a numeric grade. Examples grading XF and AU are quite rare, while it appears that not a single piece has escaped without some wear. Just a single die pair created this entire issue. The usual Large S mintmark of 1855-58 continued into 1859, and both dies are from the old, Type 1 hubs.Leer más
