The New Orleans Mint resumed coinage of the quarter dollar this year for the first time since 1844. Though the mintage of 1847-O quarters is similar to several other dates, this one seems to be common only in the lowest grades. Nice circulated examples are very scarce, while Mint State coins are true rarities. In his book on the Seated Liberty Quarter Dollar series, Larry Briggs observed that this issue typically is weakly struck on the stars and the top of Liberty's head.
