Most San Francisco Mint quarter dollars of the 1860s are rare, and this issue is no exception. Mint State pieces are few and far between, and nice circulated examples are likewise in great demand. Most 1862-S quarter are heavily worn and may reveal damage or improper cleaning. Two obverse dies, both Type 2, were alternately paired with a single reverse die, this being the same one used for a portion of the 1861-S production. San Francisco coined so few quarters before 1876 that a single delivery of reverse dies could be used for many years.
