Despite a higher mintage than several preceding San Francisco Mint quarter dollars, the 1872-S entry is the rarest from this mint in the entire Seated Liberty series. It's almost a certainty that a large percentage of these coins had not been distributed when a change in the weight standard prompted their destruction as obsolete coinage. This new law was passed in February of 1873, but it did not become effective until April 1. Sometime after that date the remaining coins of the old standard would have been melted. Examples are very scarce to rare across all grades, with even heavily worn pieces commanding substantial prices. Just a few Mint State coins are known, though at least one is a gem. The mintmark style which debuted when the motto was added in 1866 continued into this year, and it may be that enough reverse dies were shipped to San Francisco that first year that the same batch was still being drawn upon for 1872's production.Leer más
