The 1873-S quarter dollar was coined in greater numbers than the preceding issue, and the entire mintage bore arrowheads at the date indicating the new weight standard. Author Larry Briggs reported that the coins are weakly struck on the stars at right and on the reverse lettering, something that becomes more apparent on well worn examples. The rarity of this issue increases as the grade rises, but it is fairly available in the lower circulated grades. Mint State pieces are likewise available, though gems are rare. Two die pairs were used to coin 1873-S quarters, and each reverse featured a different mintmark. Reverse A utilized the same style seen on earlier dates of the Motto subtype, while Reverse B debuted a new punch that was noticeably smaller and more condensed.
