Production of quarter dollars at the San Francisco Mint tripled over that of 1873. This mintage was accomplished with three obverse dies that were successively paired with a single reverse. This reverse bore the very small, squat S used also for Briggs' 1873-S, Reverse B. This issue is moderately scarce across all circulated grades, becoming a bit more challenging at the XF and AU level. Mint State examples likely would have been extremely rare were it not for a hoard of 80-100 coins that surfaced in the middle of the last century. Some of these have been mishandled or badly cleaned over the years, but there is still a disproportionate number of gems as compared to other S-Mint quarters before 1876.Leer más
