The San Francisco Mint exceeded 1876's record production of quarter dollars this year by 400,000 pieces, and this issue is common across all grades through MS 64. Gems grading MS 65 or higher are also available and command strong prices. All 1877-S quarters feature the Type 2 reverse, but there are three styles of mintmark found for this issue. Most common is the Medium S which debuted in 1875, but there are single dies known having older style mintmarks. The Small S of 1866-75 is seen for the last time, and the Medium, Small S first seen in 1876 also exists for 1877-S. Only series specialists seem to have warmed to these varieties. The only premium variety for this year is one of the Medium S dies on which the mintmark was first punched 90 degrees counterclockwise from normal and then corrected.Leer más
