A mere 20,000 quarter dollars were struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1867, among the lowest productions of this very long series. These were used for paying off depositors of bullion, and others were shipped overseas where they either were melted as bullion or circulated locally. Very few actually circulated within the USA, and heavily worn examples are quite rare. So, too, are Mint State survivors. Such coins reveal that the sole obverse used for currency strikes was overpolished, diminishing the letters BER in LIBERTY, as well as parts of the Liberty figure. Due to the low mintage, MS and AU coins are somewhat prooflike, as the dies never lost their initial polish.Leer más
