This first emission of quarter dollars from the new Carson City Mint is unquestionably the second rarest entry in the Seated Liberty series, at least among issues made for circulation. The demand for quarter dollars was evidently rather limited, as few coins of this denomination were produced there before 1876. Not surprisingly, just a single pair of dies accounted for the 8,340 1870-CC quarters. The diagnostics of these dies were well recorded by Larry Briggs in his definitive book on this series, and they are important in authenticating examples of this very rare coin. After that high point the population drops off rapidly, with most others being heavily worn and/or damaged.Leer más
