Dies were sent to the San Francisco for 1870-S quarter dollars, yet none are known today. It's reported that at least one was produced for the cornerstone of the new mint structure, which was laid that year. Instead, 1871-S is the first S-Mint quarter dollar available to collectors after that of 1869. The number struck this year declined to less than half of 1869's production, and this issue is scarce across all grades. Mint State survivors are genuinely rare. A single die pair was used for this mintage, and its reverse features the small, wormlike S typical of 1866-73 San Francisco quarters. It is tucked up very tightly, almost touching the arrow feather.Leer más
