This issue had a modest mintage, and nearly all of these coin went into circulation immediately, so most survivors are quite worn. Examples grading Fine and higher are scarce, with Mint State pieces being in short supply. Gems are genuinely rare, and just a small number of coins have been certified as PL (prooflike). The reverse dies for 1893-S quarters came from two batches that entirely superseded the reverse dies used the previous year. Having the mintmark centered directly under the eagle's tail feathers proved impractical, and the first alternative chosen was to place it far right of center, directly over letter D in DOLLAR. This looked a bit awkward, so another round of reverse dies was sent west from Philadelphia that year placed the mintmark equidistant from the feathers, letter R of QUARTER and letter D of DOLLAR. Both positions may be found for 1893-S quarters, with the far right placement comprising roughly one third of the coins seen. Aside from the wandering mintmarks, a single variety is know for this issue. One die that originally had the mintmark placed far right was repunched with the mintmark corrected to the central location. The first punching was partially effaced, and this variety is extremely rare.Leer más
