If there was a reason for this issue's extremely low mintage it hasn't yet surfaced. 1901-S is easily the most rare Barber Quarter across all grades and one of the premier rarities of 20th Century United States coinage. Typical of Barber coinage from this period, nearly all survivors are very heavily worn, with examples grading Fine and higher being quite rare. Among the small certified population of MS coins are a few very nice gems that bring extraordinary prices at auction. The 1901-S quarter is an issue often simulated by the addition of a mintmark to the common Philadelphia issue. Though certification has rendered this deception largely obsolete, it's still good to know something about the genuine coins. All 1901-S quarter were of the hub pairing 2/3, as described under the entry for 1900(P). Two obverse dies were employed, one having both numerals 1 of the date centered over denticles and the other having the numerals 1 centered between denticles. Two reverse dies have been found, and both have the same style of mintmark used for all Barber Quarters 1898-1915. Most fake mintmarks seem to be of the style used for USA coins 1917-41, which is sufficiently distinctive to expose the alteration.
