The number of proof quarter dollar rose this year for the sole reason that interest in the new Lincoln Cent prompted greater sales of silver proof sets, which included the minor coins, too. General dissatisfaction with Barber's Liberty Head of 1892 remained almost universal among numismatists. The population of certified 1909 proof quarters is correspondingly higher than in the few preceding years. Gems are plentiful, Cameo proofs only moderately rare. Ultra Cameo examples, however, are exceedingly rare. From 1909 onward the date was punched into the master die for each year, so there are no more positional varieties within any particular year.
