There was no reported coinage of quarter dollars in 1824, yet such coins exist. It is the opinion of most series specialists that the December 31, 1823 warrant for 16,000 quarters consisted entirely of 1824/2 pieces. This number is quite plausible, given the number of examples known today, which is in the low hundreds. Nearly all of these are heavily worn, with anything at or close to Mint State being quite rare. Only a single die marriage is known, the engraver drawing on 1822's roster of unused obverse dies to create this overdate. The reverse die was also a leftover from 1823's small production. It proved durable enough to be used again for coins dated 1825 and 1828.Leer más
