As a class, the small diameter Capped Bust Quarter Dollars of 1831-28 are more plentiful than their large diameter predecessors. This is mostly a reflection of their higher mintages, though the distinctly raised rims of the new type did provide greater protection from wear. In place of the low-relief, toothed border used previously, the quarters made in 1831 and later feature a two-tiered border of short beads within a raised rim. Mint Director Samuel Moore (1824-35) considered the Latin legend E PLURIBUS UNUM to be redundant with the English inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and he sought approval to remove it when the quarter dollar was reduced in size and increased in thickness. This approval was granted by President Andrew Jackson on January 28, 1831. The seven die marriages of 1831 quarters are divided into those having UNITED STATES OF AMERICA in small letters, unique to this year, versus those having the large letters of subsequent years. Each group has a single scarce issue: B-3 (SL) and B-7 (LL). The remaining varieties are common in circulated grades, though some have provided a good pool of Mint State pieces, as well. B-5 appears to be the most available in MS.Leer más
