The last of the Big Three Barber Quarter rarities, 1913-S has the lowest mintage, yet it's more available than the key 1901-S. This is a reflection that it was only 20 years old when coin collecting became very popular in the mid 1930s, whereas the earlier issue was then 30+ years old. The difference of a dozen years was enough to make the survival rate significantly higher for this date. A fair number were deliberately saved in grades from AG through VG by persons filling early coin boards, though ones in the higher circulated grades are very rare. Mint State coins are in limited supply, but their numbers suggest that at least one roll was saved for future collectors. Gems are available, and they command very hefty premiums. The low mintage of this issue was a by-product of an economic recession that hung over the nation during 1913-14 and lingered into the following year. David Lawrence identified two mintmark positions that varied just slightly and a single obverse die. These are important diagnostic points for authentication, though 1913-S seems to be less subject to added mintmarks than the other key dates, 1896-S and 1901-S.Leer más
