The debut of the Kennedy Half Dollar coincided with a highwater mark in the coin hobby's popularity. Proof sets were already a darling of speculators, and the demand from both the profiteers and legitimate collectors pushed sales of proof sets to nearly four million in 1964. It's likely that another million or more could have been sold, but the Philadelphia Mint was dealing with a nationwide coin shortage and simply didn't have the resources to produce more non-circulating coins. This issue is plentiful across all grades short of PF-70, and any collector will be able to secure a nice specimen. The percentage of Cameo and Ultra Cameo examples is characteristically low, but the sheer number of dies needed for this mintage has provided a generous quantity of high contrast coins. There are numerous varieties for the 1964 proof half dollar, the most publicized of which is the Accented Hair obverse. This is treated separately in the entry that follows, but there are several doubled-die obverse varieties, some with three or four impressions visible. Similar varieties may be found for the reverse dies, as well, though they are less obvious. One that has become popular in recent years is the Type 1 reverse, which used a die taken from the same reverse hub seen on the Accented Hair coins.Leer más
