Introducción de monedas
In the fall of 1967 collectors were delighted to learn that the production of actual proof coins would resume in the new year. Another bonus was the addition of San Francisco's popular S mintmark (most collectors were not aware that the San Francisco Assay Office had produced the SMS coins of 1965-67). In fact, only proofs were coined of the 1968-S half dollar, and this led to a debate over whether to include such pieces in the popular coin albums. Most publishers offered the albums in two versions, one that added the proof-only coins. The price of the new sets rose to $5, but the coins were mounted within a pleasingly designed plastic case that was enclosed in a fitted box. The Mint further justified the price increase by noting that the new proof coins would be shipped via registered mail (many of the 1964 sets had been stolen in shipment). While this extra protection would be quietly dropped a few years later, it was widely heralded at the time. Eager to achieve fully brilliant fields, the SFAO aggressively polished the 1968-S dies, leaving many coins with shallow or missing design elements. This doesn't seem to have been as much of a problem with the half dollars as it was with the lesser denominations. When fresh, the dies often possessed frosted device cavities that were transmitted to the struck coins. As a result, Cameo and Ultra Cameo pieces are more available than for previous years, though they still comprise a minority of the total production. The 1968-S half dollar has several intriguing varieties, particularly those resulting from the addition of a mintmark to the obverse starting this year. The best of these varieties are the ones in which the mintmark was punched inverted and another where one style of S was punched over another style, with some underlying features visible.Leer más
