The sale of 470 proof half dollars provides a good view of the small coin market in 1864. With federal currency at its lowest value in relation to gold and silver coins that year, the price of a proof set was nearly twice as much in notes as it was in hard coin. The years 1863-64 to be the nadir of proof sales, which rose slowly but steadily over the next decade. 1864 proof half dollars are quite scarce in grades higher than PF-64.
