Introducción de monedas
The 1853 New Orleans Mint half dollar with arrows and rays is less often seen than its Philadelphia cousin, but it is not even scarce in grades below Mint State. Gems are extremely rare, but lesser MS coins typically are well struck and may be riddled with die cracks, particularly on the reverse. Not surprisingly, given its high mintage, some 21 die marriages are known from various pairings of 14 obverses and nine reverses. These figures may be compared to the 17 and 11 dies shipped to New Orleans for that year's coinage of reduced weight halves. It's likely, too, that reverse dies left over from 1852 and 1851 were also employed. A dated master hub or die was created for the obverse, so there are no variations the position of either the date or arrowheads. In fact, the mintmark was the only hand-punched element of the various working dies. The one variety observed has what appears to be the base of a numeral 1 intruding upon the date, but it's not absolutely certain that this is actually a duplicate numeral and not a random mark.Leer más
