San Francisco reached the pinnacle of its half dollar production in 1877, and it would be another 40 years before this record was broken. The 1877-S half dollar is common across all grades through the lower range of Mint State. Gems are sufficiently available to the satisfy the demand from both date and type collectors. Not surprisingly, given the high mintage, a total of 38 die marriages have been confirmed. These were the products of 31 obverse dies and a like number of reverses. Both Type 1 and Type 2 reverse hubs are seen, with the newer hub comprising about two-thirds of the extant coins. Three edge reed gauges are known 1877-S halves---147, 148 or 149. Both the Very Small S and the Micro S are known for this issue. The latter is found only on Type 1 reverses, and seven such dies are known. It's likely that all of these were holdovers from the 1875 shipment made before adoption of the new hub in 1876. The Very Small S is found with either reverse, but it is scarce having the Type 1, of which just five dies are known. A variety highly sought by specialists has a Very Small S mintmark on a reverse dies that was hubbed with the Type 1 reverse over the Type 2. A similar transitional dual hubbing is found for 1877(P) halves, and both are rare. The most popular variety for 1877-S is VP-001 (WB-103). The Very Small S was first punched far to the west of the final impression. Though shallow, it is clearly visible. The final S always shows some strike doubling, and this led to the variety formerly being known as a triple-punched S.Leer más
