Proof sales in 1869 mimicked those of 1868 and provide a good idea of the coin hobby's size at the time, at least for those interested in USA issues. Over the years most proof half dollars of this and surrounding dates were cleaned one or more times, severely reducing the number of survivors that can be certified with numeric grades. Many of these coins were subsequently retoned, either by natural or induced action, and the ultimate result is a very small number of certifiable gems. Cameo examples are very rare, and this is due not only to mishandling but to poor workmanship at the Philadelphia Mint which began to affect proof coins about this time. Most U. S. Mint proofs of 1869 and through the 1880s were subject to incomplete strikes, lessened contrast between fields and devices, as well as clumsily polished dies.Leer más
