Introducción de monedas
The high mintage of half dollars at San Francisco the previous year evidently satisfied the demand for these coins through much of 1872, as production dropped to little more than a quarter of the 1871-S issue. Slightly scarce in lower grades, the 1872-S half dollar become very scarce in grades XF and AU. Mint State pieces are genuinely rare, though when found are quite well made. The San Francisco Mint requested and received 10 die pairs for half dollars. Not all were used, as only four obverses and three reverses have been identified. One of the reverse dies was used twice, for a total of four die marriages. This die had been used for 1871-S halves, too, and it displays the Small Wide S. A new punch debuted this year, the Medium Small S. Bugert reports that all die marriages for 1872-S half dollars are of about equal scarcity. A single collar gauge is known, this being of 154 reeds. Collectors are warned to watch for extremely deceptive counterfeits of this issue having the Very Small S mintmark not used on genuine coins before 1875.Leer más
