There exists in U. S. Mint records an entry showing the delivery of 5,000 San Francisco Mint half dollars in February, prior to the adoption of arrowheads at the date. Not a single specimen has ever surfaced, but nor is there a record of these coins being destroyed. A single piece was shipped to the Philadelphia Mint March 5 for the annual assay, but this is presumed to have been melted in the process. The fate of the others may never be known. San Francisco Mint Superintendent Oscar La Grange requested 10 obverse dies and four reverses for 1873's half dollar coinage, but the record of how many were shipped there is not extant. Just a single die marriage is known, but the number of coins produced is high for single dies, and additional (very rare) dies may yet be discovered. The Minute S mintmark used this year is not found on earlier half dollars, though it would continue into 1874. All 1873-S half dollars have 145 reeds, a figure also found on Philadelphia Mint halves of this date, so the possibility of an added mintmark alteration does exist. Fortunately, the economic incentive for performing such an operation is minimal.Leer más
