With the end of proof-only trade dollars (at least for public sale), speculative interest in proof sets declined a bit for this year through the end of the Seated Liberty series. Two die marriages are known for this date, but collectors care little for their individual rarities. Overall, this date is noticeably scarcer than for the several years preceding it. Since collectors took greater care of the proofs made during the low-mintage currency years of 1879-91, there are a fair number of gems. Certified Cameo proofs are likewise available, but in much smaller numbers. As was the norm most 1884 proof half dollars were coined during the first quarter of the year, some 590 in fact. Additional deliveries occurred in the second (240) and fourth (114) quarters. With 875 silver proof sets placed, this left 69 redundant examples that were melted after the end of the calendar year.Leer más
